MARIJE HELLWICH

As an artist and researcher, Marije Hellwich works at the intersection of semiotics, material culture and identity. Hellwich creates garments, (textile-based) installations and exhibitions, writes about the symbolic dimensions of objects and deliberately shares her research process with the public.

Her background is in fashion design: she studied at HKU (Utrecht) and Gerrit Rietveld Academie (Amsterdam), and interned at Maison Margiela (Paris), Hussein Chalayan (London) and moniquevanheist (Rotterdam). After graduating, Hellwich was selected as emerging talent by Elle, Vogue and Items Magazine, among others, and showed work at Amsterdam Fashion Week and Dutch Design Week.

After a period as an entrepreneur - during which she founded The Domestic Botanist, a sustainable shop and studio, and discovered how design can bring people together - Hellwich returned to her artistic and research practice in 2025.

With her label A TOTEM OF, she uncovers the cultural stories behind iconic objects and translates them into contemporary designs. In 2026 Hellwich is supported by Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie (the Dutch Creative Industries Fund).

Alongside her artistic practice, Hellwich writes a monthly newsletter and a regular column for Uitagenda Utrecht. Marije Hellwich is available for commissions, collaborations and publications.
